There is always this thin line between being pro business and being unethical. There are certainly a lot of people out there who are trying to legitimise their unethical practices with the term "pro business". I read an article today which shocked me to my core. It really shows how we have been duped all this time.
When we think of insurers, ie. companies like AIA, Prudential, Great Eastern, we think of a company which protects our lives, health and wealth. Well, think again. Some life insurers actually invest big in tobacco companies. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, about 4.4 billion dollars in insurance company funds are invested in companies that produce cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products like tobacco gum, etc... Prudential Plc has 1.38 billion dollars in two tobacco companies. Tobacco is the leading cause for diseases like lung cancer. Also, it increases the risk of other health problems like heart attack and stroke.
Think your insurer cares about your health? Think again. Perhaps the best form of protection is self control and discipline.
To all smokers: Quit smoking. Even the people who are supposed to help you are making a quit buck from you.
This is a blog about my random rants and a point of discussion for my clients, collegues and anyone in general who is interested in insurance, savings, investments and real estate.
