Many people use the term "blue chip stocks". Very few know what it means. It actually means a high grade, investment quality company with long records of earnings growth.
Why the term "blue chip"? When you go to a casino and change for chips, the blue chip is normally the largest denomination available. Thus the term was coined from there likening high grade stocks to the most valuable chips on the casino floor.
